Pharmacognosy is a science that deals with raw materials with therapeutic properties from nature. This course aims to provide first-year Master's students in Pharmaceutical Engineering with the knowledge and terminology necessary for their field. This course will make them understand the difference between the science of studying the composition, activity, and toxicity of a natural product, more specifically plants with medicinal properties, and the science that uses these plants to treat, prevent, or diagnose diseases.

The course is divided into two main parts: one dedicated to general pharmacognosy, where terminology, definitions, and methods for obtaining the active ingredients will be discussed; the other to special pharmacognosy, where monographs dedicated to different families of active ingredients will be detailed.

This provides an important basis that leads the extraction, isolation and the use of these natural active ingredients when formulating products, whether for medicines, cosmetics or dietary supplements.
