
Course Description
This course provides first-year engineering students with the fundamental concepts and methods of descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. It develops the ability to collect, organize, summarize, visualize, and interpret data using appropriate statistical tools. The course also introduces the analysis of relationships between quantitative variables and the construction of simple linear regression models for explanation and prediction. It serves as a foundation for more advanced courses in probability, statistics, data analysis, and engineering applications.
Target Audience
This course is intended for first-year engineering students (ST). It is designed for learners with a basic mathematical background who wish to acquire the statistical knowledge and analytical skills required for engineering studies and data-driven problem solving.
Course Objectives
The main objectives of this course are to:
- Develop students' understanding of the fundamental principles of descriptive statistics.
- Enable students to organize, summarize, and present quantitative data using numerical measures and graphical representations.
- Introduce methods for analyzing relationships between two quantitative variables using covariance and correlation.
- Present the principles of simple linear regression and least squares estimation.
- Develop students' ability to interpret statistical results and evaluate the quality of a regression model.
