The course "Structure of Matter" officially titled "Elements of Chemistry" (code: IST 1.3), is offered to first-year students in the Science, Engineering and Technology program at Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology (USTHB). It serves as an essential foundation of their chemistry training, enabling them to understand the structure of matter from the macroscopic to the subatomic scale.
The course introduces the fundamental concepts of general chemistry, including the states of matter and their classification, quantitative measures (the mole, concentration, and density) and unit systems, before exploring the electronic structure of the atom through both classical mechanics (Bohr) and wave mechanics (Schrödinger and Heisenberg) models.
The course is organized into two main learning units, each with specific objectives, prerequisites, an entry assessment, and mathematical exercises of progressively increasing difficulty.
At the end of this course the student will be able to :
· Understand the nature and organization of matter.
· Describe physical states and transformations of matter.
· Apply basic quantitative concepts in chemistry.
· Understand atomic structure using both classical and quantum models.
